Set out on the only day tour (about 9.5 Hours) to the Great Lake and Tasmania’s Central Plateau. You will be looked after by your Tasmanian tour guide David, who is seasoned in local knowledge and can make the place come alive with stories.
8am, meet at the Tasmanian Travel and Information Centre (20 Davey Street). We start with southern midlands farming district and up to the historic highland town of Bothwell. We will make a stop for you to pick up hot drinks.
Then we will visit the 1916 Waddamana hydro power station and learn the story of its rise and dramatic fall. Your discovery will be enlightened by the discussion with David, who once worked for the power industry. We travel on to the trout fishing community of Flintstone inspired by the local geology. Viewing the mighty Arthurs Lake we learn how two lakes, became one and the surprising story of where its waters go. We will stop at the Arthurs Lake Road house for a warm lunch purchased by guests.
We will then rise up to the southern end of the massive Great Lake where the Miena Dam holds back the vast waters. Soon we embark on an investigative walk to determine if Reynolds Island (the lake’s largest island) really is an Island. Then it comes to a scenic drive along the lake shore and up the bends to The Great Lake Lookout which opens a bird’s-eye view for you, and get out to breathe in the fresh air on your arrival.
Our next stop is a short walk to the pristine Pine Lake through a forest of rare pencil pines which only grow in Tasmania. David can bring all this in to focus with his Tasmanian university studies in botany, geology, rivers and lakes.
Then we arrive at the Liffey Forest Lookout to witness the steep rocky Escarpment and smell the leafy rainforest, where the central Plateau high country dramatically drops away towards the north.
We return through the historic midlands town of Kempton and admire its heritage building. About 5:30pm, we will arrive back at the Tasmanian Travel Information Centre in time for dinner, bringing with us memories of Tasmania’s High Country.
Please be aware that the trip time also includes travel time with scenic views with some commentary.
